From Lucca take the S.S.N.12 Abetone/Brennero as far as Ponte a Moriano (8,5 kms.). From here cross the Serchio River and proceed along the main road, through the valley, as far as Gallicano (36 kms.). After passing the rocky gorge of Lake Trombacco, take the road for Fornovolasco (44 kms.). Continuing uphill, cross three valleys, thus shortly arriving at the "Cave".
Having left Forte dei Marmi, bypassed Querceta and arrived at Seravezza (7 kms.), continue along the River Vezza, leaving it 2 kilometres after Ruosina, where the ascent to the "Galleria del Cipollaio" begins (29 kms.).This is the connecting point between Versilia and Garfagnana. Once through the tunnel, the scenery becomes alpine, the deep valleys are flanked by beautiful, rocky mountain-faces. Having passed the "Tre Fiumi" locality, and the small lake of Isola Santa, one reaches Castelnuovo Garfagnana (42 kms.) from where, by descending into the Serchio Valley, one quickly reaches Gallicano (53 kms.). From here, follow the directions as for Route 1. It is possible to save 4 km. by taking the more scenic Monteperpoli road from Castelnuovo to Gallicano.
Cut through the centre of Massa and ascend as far as San Carlo, (thermal spa), which dominates the Apuan Riviera. Head towards the highest mountains, bypassing the villages of Altagnana and Antona (10 kms.). This is where, through a series of bends, the real ascent begins, leading to an extremely suggestive rocky area, which is dominated by the well-known marble peaks of the Northern/Central Apuans. Having passed the "Galleria del Monte Pelato", continue (a little further ahead, having reached "Tre Fiumi") as per Route "2".
From Aulla take the S.S.N.63 "Passo del Cerreto" for 12 kms., then turn right for Casola in Lunigiana (19 kms.), which is the beginning of the uphill route for "Passo dei Carpinelli", a picturesque area from where you can enjoy a fabulous view of the Northern Alps. From here descend towards Piazza al Serchio (42 kms.) and Castelnuovo Garfagnana, continuing as per Route 2.
From Florence take the A11 as far as the toll at Altopascio (50 kms.). Here, take the road for Porcari, Marlia, Ponte a Moriano (66 kms.) and then continue as per Route 1.
From MILAN it is advisable to take the A1, almost as far as Parma, changing to the A15 for Aulla (193,5 kms.). From Aulla, continue as per Route 4 (The Wind Cave is situated at 272,5 kms. from Milan). For those wishing to avoid the winding connecting road between Lunigiana and Garfagnana, having reached Aulla, keep driving until you reach the A12. From here, drive southwards as far as the A11 which will take you to Lucca in less than 20 kms. From Lucca, continue as per Route 1. (323 kms.)
From TURIN take the A21 to Alessandria. From here, follow the A26 as far as Voltri, and then the A10 to Genova. The A12 begins here - follow this motorway as far as the toll booth at Massa, if you choose to follow Route "3" (323 kms.); as far as Versilia, for Route "2" (333,6 kms.); or alternatively, as far as the turn-off for the A11, if you prefer a quicker route, passing through Lucca and continuing as per Route "1" (343 kms.).
From VERONA take the A1 as far as the toll booth at MODENA NORD, where you then take the A22 to Florence. From here, continue as per Route 5 (250 kms.).
From PADOVA take the A13 to Bologna, and then continue along the A1 until Firenze Nord. From here continue as per Route 5 (304 kms.).
